FAQ on Chess Board Editor
Position setup, validation and moving the FEN into another tool.
How do I set up a chess position?
Choose a piece from the palette and tap a square. Use the eraser to clear a square, then set the side to move and metadata.
Can I drag pieces onto the board?
Yes on desktop. You can drag from the palette, and click or tap placement also works on desktop and mobile.
What FEN fields can I edit?
You can edit piece placement, side to move, castling rights, en passant, halfmove clock and fullmove number through the FEN field.
Why does the editor warn about kings?
A playable standard chess position needs exactly one king of each color. The editor lets you work while incomplete, then explains what remains.
Does the editor validate legal history?
It validates FEN structure and basic playable-board requirements. It cannot prove that every position could arise from a legal historical game.
Can I send the position to Stockfish?
Yes. Use Analyze this position. The exact FEN is passed to the analysis board in the page URL and saved locally.
Can I use the board editor on a phone?
Yes. Tap a palette piece, then tap one or more squares. All controls have phone-sized targets.
