About Bobby Fischer

Thirteen-year-old Bobby Fischer studying the board

Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) was a Brooklyn prodigy who became US champion at fourteen and never stopped winning until he took the world crown. His 1971 Candidates run, 6-0, 6-0 and 6.5-2.5 against three of the best players alive, remains the most dominant qualifying campaign in chess history. The 1972 match with Spassky in Reykjavik made him a Cold War icon and the only Western world champion of the postwar era. He never defended the title, and the legend of the vanished champion followed him to his grave in Iceland.

Questions about playing Bobby Fischer

Can I play against Bobby Fischer for free?

Yes. You can start a game without a subscription, account or download.

Who was Bobby Fischer?

Bobby Fischer was a celebrated chess master. The portrait and lifetime on this page identify the person represented here.

Can I change Fischer's playing strength?

Yes. Choose the approximate Lichess scale from 600 to 3000 or FIDE scale from 1500 to 2600, both in 100-point steps.

Is the strength number a historical rating?

No. It is an approximate playing-strength target for this game, not a biographical rating or a rating conversion.

Can I start from a FEN or PGN?

Yes. Standard chess is the default. Open Starting position to paste a FEN or one PGN. A PGN loads its final mainline position.
