FAQ on Chess Next Move Checker

Position setup, line building, fair play and local processing.

How does the chess move checker work?
Set up or load a position and press Show best move. Stockfish finds the best move for the side to move, draws it on the board as an arrow and lists two other good moves. To test yourself, play your own move first and press Rate my last move.
Why can’t I move a piece?
Only the side to move can move. If you have not played a move yet, touching a piece of the other color switches the side to move for you. While a piece is picked in the Set up palette, taps place pieces instead of moving them, so press Done to go back to playing.
Can I move for both White and Black?
Yes. Moves alternate as in a game. After any move you can ask for the best reply, or press Play to make Stockfish’s move and keep going.
Can I set up a position without opening another page?
Yes. The Set up tab includes all twelve pieces, an eraser, side to move, castling rights, en passant, clear board, and standard position controls.
Can I use a FEN or PGN?
Yes. Paste a complete FEN or one PGN main line. The checker validates the resulting position before you use it.
What if my move is not Stockfish's first choice?
The rating shows how much your move gives away compared with Stockfish’s choice. Best, excellent and good moves are fine to play. Inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders cost more, and Take back shows you the stronger move.
Can I check more than one decision?
Yes. Every time the position changes you can press Show best move again, for whichever side is to move.
Can I use this during a live game?
No. Do not use it during a live or rated game. It is intended for post-game review and positions you are studying.
Does the position stay private?
Yes. The tool parses the position and runs Stockfish locally in your browser.
