Train & Practice Italian Game with ChessDoctrine

Everything on this page comes out of our Italian Game guide. Three moves put your bishop on c4, aimed at the one pawn in Black's camp that only the king defends. Learn the 14 commented lines, drill the 34 decisions until they arrive on their own, then play the bot. The same three moves pay differently as you climb: f7 traps around 800, the c3-d4 break by 1200, the slow Pianissimo squeeze above 1800.

Learn the lines of the guide

Fourteen lines, one at a time: eleven you play as White, three you meet as Black. The Giuoco Piano comes first, then the Evans and the Fried Liver, then the Two Knights, the Hungarian and the Semi-Italian, then the traps and the two mates, with Black's own recipe last. Step through the moves and the comment for each half-move appears as you reach it. Finish a line and its checkmark stays in your browser.

Where this comes from: every line, comment, and engine number in Learn and Drill is lifted from our Italian Game guide. That includes the evaluations you will see quoted: -0.21 for 4...d5 against the Ng5 raid, +1.26 for 6.Kf1 once the bishop lands on f2, +0.17 for the quiet 5.d3, and the two mates in one that sit in the guide's own test set.

Drill the 34 decisions that matter

This is the core of the trainer. Thirty-four positions across six themes: book moves, plans, traps, punishments, structure, endgame echoes. Every one of the 14 lines you stepped through in Step 1 is drilled at least twice, and the order is shuffled on each run so you answer from the board and not from memory of the queue. Click or drag a piece to play your answer. A wrong move gets a concrete refutation, and hints come in two stages before the answer itself is offered. Your score, streak, and solved drills stay in this browser.

Play the bot and apply it

Now play it out. Pick one of the six variations, set the bot's strength with the seven named levels or the Elo slider from 600 to 2500, and start. The coach card watches the moves and speaks up when the game reaches something the guide covers. Run the review when it ends.

Italian Game variations

Six positions from the guide, from the bare 3.Bc4 to the moment the white queen lands on b3. Each carries a goal for both colors, and picking one restarts the board there.

Drill one branch at a time

Play the era these lines came from

  • Paul MorphyOpen games and fast development, which is the whole argument the Evans Gambit makes.
  • Adolf AnderssenThe Romantic era the Italian gambits grew out of, at full strength.
  • Mikhail ChigorinHe kept the Evans Gambit on the board long after fashion had left it.
  • Wilhelm SteinitzThe other half of the argument: take the pawn, then prove you can hold it.

Sharpen the habits

  • Opening puzzlesMore find-the-move work in early-phase positions, usually moves 8 to 18, across every opening.
  • Checkmate puzzlesTwo of the guide's five tests end in mate in one. Train the pattern until you see it.
  • CastlingThe Fried Liver strips this right from Black on move six, and the term page explains what that costs.
  • Mega Chess AnalysisFind out whether the opening is even your biggest leak.
